Some of it, yes. Lubricating rollers and hinges, tightening loose bolts on the track, clearing the photo-eye sensors of dust - any homeowner can do that safely with the door closed and the opener unplugged. What you shouldn't touch is the torsion spring itself. On a house from the 1978 era, that spring has been under tension for decades longer than a spring on newer stock, and the winding cones can fail without warning. We've seen enough of this housing stock to say plainly: if the spring is the problem, it's not a weekend project. Cables under tension, worn drums, and bent track on a door this old carry the same warning. If you're not sure what you're looking at, that uncertainty is the answer - call it in.
